Lesson 22
KEEP THE SABBATH DAY
HOLY
Objective: Prepare ourselves mentally,
spiritually, and physically to keep the Sabbath day holy.
Visual aid: Elephant – Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy
Lesson ideas:
* God created the
world in 6 days and rested on the 7th
and sanctified it
(Gen.2:2-3)
* God gave Moses the
10 commandments the 4th one is: Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it
holy. Six days shalt thou labour and do
all thy work but the 7th day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy
God. (Exodus 20:8-11)
* More important than
rest is remembering the Sabbath is a holy day, a day of worship, one in which
men turn their whole souls to the Lord to renew their covenants with him and
feed their souls upon the things of the Spirit, (Mormon Doctrine page 658)
* We show Heavenly Father
we love him by going to church and partaking of the sacrament, which shows Christ
we remember him and his sacrifice for us.
1. We also show our love by not
working, not going to stores and spending money.
2. We show our love by doing good
things; visiting sick or relatives, writing in journals or writing letters.
* Our pioneers were
good examples of keeping the Sabbath day holy. Their goal was to get to the place where they could build their homes
and their religion. Six days they
traveled but the 7th day, the Sabbath, they rested and worshiped.
* The Israelites also
were told to keep the Sabbath day holy.
They gathered manna each day but on the 6th day they were
told to gather enough manna to last for the Sabbath.
Scriptures:
Bible
Psalm 92:1 song for
Sabbath day – give thanks
Exodus 16:26 six days ye shall gather
but the seventh
Exodus 20:10 the
seventh day is the Sabbath on
my holy day
LDS Scriptures
Mosiah 13:19 blessed the Sabbath
D&C 68:29 observe the Sabbath day
D&C 59:9 go to the house of prayer
Activities:
* Some fun Sunday activities might be quiet
games, sing songs, a walk outside enjoying nature, read “The Friend” or write in your journal or letters to
missionaries.
* With clay, play dough, or paper make happy
faces. We are happy to be with our family on Sunday.
Play Dough Recipe:
2 Cups water
2 Cups flour
1 Cup salt
½ Cup cornstarch
1 Tbls Salad oil
1 Tbls. Alum (spice)
Heat all ingredients and stir until
smooth. Add food coloring and
knead. Store in plastic bag.
Scripture fun: Who said this?
“I will go and do the things which
the Lord has commanded” (Nephi)
“Am I
my brother’s keeper?” (Cain)
“Let
my people go” (Moses)
* Make a simple treat
for your family like popcorn.
* Scripture chase
activity – if old enough have children find the Noah story or David and Goliath
in the scriptures. For younger children
have pictures taped to the wall and have children find the story.
* Jesus’s day.
Think about Jesus and things he would want you to do to remember him and
others
* Bring out your stuffed animals and play church,
have a song, make announcements, give a talk, and say a prayer.
* Have pictures of the apostles and their
names written on a piece of paper and match them up.
* With plastic cups
build a tower like King Benjamin had where he told the people of Christ.
* Memorize an article of faith or other scripture.
* Magnet game: Obtain a string with a small magnet on the end
to fish out paper. Put words on a paper
that would be good to do on a Sunday and things that would not be as good to do
on Sunday. As you fish them out decide
what pile it should go in, the good to do or not so good.
